Tips For Managing Food Allergies and Intolerances

Tips For Managing Food Allergies and Intolerances

If you have food allergies or intolerance’s it is important to have a plan to avoid eating the foods that cause irritation. Below are some top tips for managing food allergies.

Eat natural – If you focus on natural foods, you know what you are eating. Eating processed foods, or pre-made combinations will mean you need to carefully read food labels, and hope there is no cross-contamination.

By eating a natural diet of simple meat/fish and fruits/veg you know exactly what you are eating, and it is easy to avoid problem foods.

Eat at home/prepare your own food – You are always going to be safest when the responsibility for food preparation is handled personally. Even innocuous foods in restaurants or other people’s homes can easily be contaminated by accident.

Make most of your food yourself and take your own pre-packed food to work for lunch. If you know you are eating out, tell them in advance about your allergies, and have them confirm that they know what foods could be a trigger, and how to properly avoid cross contamination between knives, chopping boards and other cooking utensils.

Segment food and cooking equipment at home – If you have a specific diet for avoiding allergies, but other people in your household do not, you should segment your food and utensils away from theirs.

Have your own pans, knives, boards, etc. and keep your food in a separate cupboard. This ensures there will be no contamination from their foods.

Depending on the severity of your allergies and intolerances, this can be a very serious business. You should ensure that you are doing everything you can to avoid any potential intolerances. It can be a hassle, but it’s better than the alternative, which could have very serious consequences.
